Sewing Machine Mat Tutorial

If there’s one thing I love almost as much as making quilts, it’s making something that makes my sewing space a little more functional and a lot cuter. This Sewing Machine Mat checks both boxes!

I originally designed this mat as a fun project to sit underneath your sewing machine while also giving you a little extra organization right where you need it. It’s a great way to add some personality to your sewing table, use fabrics you love, and make something that you’ll actually use every time you sit down to sew.

Why Make a Sewing Machine Mat?

Besides looking cute underneath your machine, a sewing machine mat can help protect the surface of your sewing table and give your machine a nice place to sit.

But my favorite part is the pockets along the front.

They’re perfect for keeping some of those things that are constantly disappearing while you sew like your scissors, seam rippers, marking tools, rulers, clips, and all the other little necessities that somehow manage to wander away the second you need them.

Instead of digging through a drawer or searching underneath a pile of fabric, you can keep your most-used tools right in front of you.

A Great Project for Your Favorite Fabrics

This is also one of those projects where you can really have fun with your fabric choices.

Make it bright and colorful, keep it simple and modern, use scraps from your favorite quilt, or coordinate it with the rest of your sewing room. You can make it completely your own.

And because this is something that will live right on your sewing table, it’s a fun excuse to use those fabrics you love looking at every day.

Make One for Yourself or a Sewing Friend

A sewing machine mat also makes a great handmade gift for another quilter or sewist. Pair it with a few notions, a new seam ripper, some clips, or a cute pair of scissors, and you have a really fun sewing-themed gift.

It would also be a perfect project for a sewing swap, retreat, guild activity, or handmade gift exchange.

Of course, you may want to make one for yourself first. 😉
